BhK9本库

Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. ThehK9本库

arugula (芝麻菜 ) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roasthK9本库

chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with ahK9本库

dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, thehK9本库

arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; IhK9本库

could have made six salads with what I threw out.hK9本库

In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food wastehK9本库

goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’shK9本库

cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown awayhK9本库

— from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to largehK9本库

amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.hK9本库

Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and otherhK9本库

resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem.hK9本库

In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the thirdhK9本库

largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”hK9本库

If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at thehK9本库

back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time —hK9本库

but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing theirhK9本库

last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., whichhK9本库

recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered morehK9本库

than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemishedhK9本库

(有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And thehK9本库

strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use inhK9本库

meals down the road.hK9本库

Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “EveryonehK9本库

can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more foodhK9本库

than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to nothK9本库

include the side dish you won’t eat.” Curtin says.hK9本库

24. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?hK9本库

A. We pay little attention to food waste.hK9本库

B. We waste food unintentionally at times.hK9本库

C. We waste more vegetables than meat.hK9本库

D. We have good reasons for wasting food.hK9本库

25. What is a consequence of food waste according to the text?hK9本库

A. Moral decline.hK9本库

B. Environmental harm.hK9本库

C. Energy shortage.hK9本库

D. Worldwide starvation.hK9本库

26. What does Curtin’s company do?hK9本库

A. It produces kitchen equipment.hK9本库

B. It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.hK9本库

C. It helps local farmers grow fruits.hK9本库

D. It makes meals out of unwanted food.hK9本库

27. What does Curtin suggest people do?hK9本库

A. Buy only what is needed.hK9本库

B. Reduce food consumption.hK9本库

C. Go shopping once a week.hK9本库

D. Eat in restaurants less often.hK9本库

fun the project can bring to people here.”hK9本库

A. Improve.hK9本库

B. Oppose.hK9本库

C. Begin.hK9本库

D. Evaluate.hK9本库

A. It is well received.hK9本库

B. It needs to be more creative.hK9本库

D. It takes ages to see the results.hK9本库

C. It is highly profitable.hK9本库

Human speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from thehK9本库

common “m” and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages.hK9本库

But why are certain sounds more common than others? A ground-breaking,hK9本库

five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to newhK9本库

speech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.hK9本库

More than 30 years ago, the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speechhK9本库

sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”, were more common in thehK9本库

languages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led byhK9本库

Damián Blasi at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has found how andhK9本库

why this trend arose.hK9本库

They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient humanhK9本库

adults were aligned (对齐), making it hard to produce labiodentals, whichhK9本库

are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jawshK9本库

changed to an overbite structure (结构), making it easier to produce suchhK9本库

sounds.hK9本库

The team showed that this change in bite was connected with thehK9本库

development of agriculture in the Neolithic period. Food became easier tohK9本库

chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and sohK9本库

didn’t grow to be so large.hK9本库

Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a globalhK9本库

change in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the usehK9本库

of “f” and “v” increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years.hK9本库

These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gathererhK9本库

people today.hK9本库

This research overturns the popular view that all human speech soundshK9本库

were present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago. “ThehK9本库

set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since thehK9本库

appearance of human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech soundshK9本库

that we find today is the product of a complex interplay of things likehK9本库

biological change and cultural evolution,” said Steven Moran, a member ofhK9本库

the research team.hK9本库

32. Which aspect of the human speech sound does Damián Blasi’s researchhK9本库

focus on?hK9本库

A. Its variety.hK9本库

B. Its distribution.hK9本库

D. Its development.hK9本库

C. Its quantity.hK9本库

33. Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals?hK9本库

A. They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.hK9本库

B. They could not open and close their lips easily.hK9本库

C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.hK9本库

D. Their lower front teeth were not large enough.hK9本库

34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?hK9本库

A. Supporting evidence for the research results.hK9本库

B. Potential application of the research findings.hK9本库

C. A further explanation of the research methods.hK9本库

D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.hK9本库

35. What does Steven Moran say about the set of human speech sounds?hK9本库

A. It is key to effective communication.hK9本库

B. It contributes much to cultural diversity.hK9本库

C. It is a complex and dynamic system.hK9本库

D. It drives the evolution of human beings.hK9本库

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to ThankhK9本库

Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if youhK9本库

know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “ 36 ”hK9本库

With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is ahK9本库

subtle (微妙) competition.hK9本库

So, how do you find a workout partner?hK9本库

First of all, decide what you want from that person.hK9本库

37hK9本库

Or do youhK9本库

just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?hK9本库

Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.hK9本库

You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media,hK9本库

but it probably won’t result in a useful response. If you plan onhK9本库

38hK9本库

working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.hK9本库

My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. HerhK9本库

notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days ahK9本库

week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age.hK9本库

It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phonehK9本库

number.hK9本库

You and your partner will probably have different skills.hK9本库

40hK9本库

OverhK9本库

time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift morehK9本库

weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of yourhK9本库

relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.hK9本库

A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.hK9本库

B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.hK9本库

C. You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.hK9本库

D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?hK9本库

E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice?hK9本库

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven differenthK9本库

primary schools in and around the small town were warming up andhK9本库

walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.hK9本库

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himselfhK9本库

off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothyhK9本库

smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with thehK9本库

other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.hK9本库

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!hK9本库

I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him whathK9本库

had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh athK9本库

him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, andhK9本库

let him decide.”hK9本库

I bit back my frustration (懊恼 ). I knew the coach meant well — hehK9本库

thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David couldhK9本库

run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small bodyhK9本库

rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.hK9本库

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or runninghK9本库

like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regularhK9本库

kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they werehK9本库

doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David hadhK9本库

decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that’s all.hK9本库

David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished hishK9本库

run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special educationhK9本库

teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and washK9本库

proud of his strong determination.hK9本库
